Alistair Duncan, a cut and thrust UK lawyer, has to win a compensation case for Roger Goodhart. His client’s car has been crushed by a French juggernaut on a road in Devon, England.

Goodhart, besides being paralysed, has no memory of the accident. How can Duncan prove his client was blameless? The police have no helpful witnesses. The task seems impossible but Duncan, ever resourceful, travels to France to sleuth the French trucker, where he meets and is helped by the resourceful Helène.
